About the Artist

What is art, and what is its purpose? I have found that art is a myriad of different things to each one of us who sees, holds, wears or uses it. A few of the purposes for me as an artist is to create peace, touch a soul, produce an emotion and to inspire people around me. I find my deepest inspiration comes from nature and all that it encompasses; the people and places that make our world such an interesting place.

My humble beginnings in art started in the Earth itself, the very dirt under our feet. As a child I made (and sometimes ate) “doodle bug pies” which were a delightful combination of mud and “doodle bug” insects. Now I know that one or two of you have done this or thought of this as a child yourself. I didn’t realize it at the time that I was developing the mind and hands of an artist, taking something in nature and creating a new way of looking at the world.

As an adult I continued to work in several different medias. I am fascinated by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and the design style of Greene and Greene. I fell in love with woodworking many years ago and had the wonderful opportunity to attend Santa Fe Community College. Some of the very best woodworking instructors in the country teach there, and I’ll forever be grateful for the knowledge and skills I developed there. Turning wood led to an interest in pottery, and I was especially drawn to Japanese ceramics. I appreciate the minimal use of space and the fine lines and shape utilized in Asian art. Not only did I begin to study Asian art, but enjoy learning about the religion, philosophy, architecture, history and societies that have led to some of the world’s greatest art. I find it intriguing that even in the Southwest, one of my favorite places to travel, that the influence of Asian art is incorporated into art, architecture and life style.

Art teaches me about myself and the nature of all things. It helps me meditate and teaches me spiritual dimensions. Art is a way of living.
